Matthew Holubesko, 18, of 8 Water St., and Thomas Gemba, 17, of 60 North St., were arrested at 3:42 p.m. on two counts each of attempting to commit a crime, one count each of breaking and entering to commit a misdemeanor and illegal possession of alcohol.
Bushway said the pair were arrested in a white sedan outside a Starlight Drive home after the owner spotted them looking through her garage. Bushway said officers found a 30-pack of beer in the trunk.
The arrest came a half-hour after the teens were seen running away from a Courtney Road residence and getting away in a white sedan, the deputy chief said.
The incidents match reports of similar thefts dating back to November 2006, Bushway said, and police are investigating whether Holubesko and Gemba are involved. "We have a dozen identified reported breaks," he said.
The incidents are classified as break-ins, but Bushway said technically nothing had been broken, that beer was stolen from refrigerators in unlocked garages.
"All of the (garage) doors unfortunately were left open and the refrigerators were clearly visible from the street," Bushway said.
Other than beer, nothing was ever reported stolen, Bushway said, but the thefts might not have happened at all if the garage doors had been closed.
"If the garages had been closed, they would not have been entered," the deputy chief said.
