Gov. Deval Patrick went to Hingham with Hingham Rep. Garrett Bradley and Weymouth Sen. Robert Hedlund on Friday to announce a capital project that will rebuild the Hingham Rotary.
As part of the Massachusetts Recovery Plan to secure the state’s economic future, Patrick announced that Hingham will receive $2.4 million for improvements to the rotary intersection of Route 3A and Summer Street.
“There are safety issues, there are convenience of travel issues and there are also jobs that comes from a project like this,” Patrick said. “In the short term in terms of construction jobs- in the longer terms of environment for downtown investments.”
Bradley said the rotary will be replaced with traffic signals. The purpose of the construction is to eliminate the dangerous rotary and increase traffic flow to the downtown center.
The state representative also said the sidewalk in front of the the Lincoln Maritime Center will be filled with grass and a more accessible walking area for pedestrians.
Patrick also announced that Cohasset will receive $450,000 to repair the Jacobs Meadow sewer main.
Patrick’s announcement of the two grants, came in front of the Lincoln Maritime Center on the Hingham Harbor where a dredging project was started Thursday.
The estimated cost of that project was $3.7 million, 75 percent of which will be paid for by the state.
