Field hockey set for tournament

The Marauders topped Newton North, 2-0, in the home finale on Thursday, but were edged 3-2 by Milton on Saturday to finish the regular season at 6-11-1 overall and 5-11-0 in the Bay State Conference.

In the win over the Tigers, Kelly Celata and Amanda Celata scored the goals while Sarah Mosca recorded the shutout and stopped a penalty stroke while Becky Cormack had a strong game on the left wing.

Cormack and Kaitlyn Abber scored for the Marauders, tying the game each time, but the Wildcats scored on a breakaway with about five minutes remaining for the win.

After getting off to a 1-6-0 start, Dedham was 5-5-1 over the final 11 games and qualified for the tournament with a scoreless tie at Canton on Oct. 12.

“I’m excited, they’re playing well going (into the postseason),” said Marauders coach Leigh Shea. “Last game they lost on turf, but they’re playing well.”

The Marauders, who earned the No. 17 seed in the Division 2 South tournament, were scheduled to have opened the postseason yesterday against No. 16 Foxboro in the preliminary round. A recap of that game was unavailable at press time and can be seen at www.wickedlocaldedham.com. The winner will be at top-seeded Harwich tomorrow.

Boys soccer heads in on high note

The Marauders entered the Division 2 South tournament on a winning note with a 1-0 win over Milton on Monday, eliminating the Wildcats from postseason consideration.

Pat Bligh ran on to a long ball played from the center of the field and over the defense by Alvaro De La Puente, and finished in the 73rd minute. The Marauders were bolstered by the return of defender Chris Rush from an injury.

Dedham, which will learn its postseason draw today, finished the regular season at 6-11-1 overall and 5-11-0 in the Bay State Conference.

The Marauders was unable to convert on chances in the first half and dropped a 2-0 decision to Walpole on Friday.

Baron ends season at states

Junior Matt Baron concluded his season by shooting 82 at Wyantenuk Country Club in Great Barrington in the Division 3 state championship on Monday. Baron’s 12-over score put him tied for 34th out of the 50 players competing for the individual title. Joe Cooper of Wayland claimed the crown with a 3-under 67, helping the Wildcats earn the team title as well.

Collins carries torch at BSC

Rachel Collins was the only Marauder runner to compete in the varsity races at Saturday’s Bay State Conference Cross Country Championship at Coakley Middle School in Norwood. Collins finished in the 5K course in 24:24, taking 52nd out of 74 runners.
