Girls hoop bows in first round

Despite heading into the postseason having lost their final 11 games of the regular season, the Marauders did not look out of place in the Division 3 South draw, giving top-seeded Coyle-Cassidy some difficulty before falling 50-32 in the first round.

Dedham trailed just 26-16 at the half after outscoring the Warriors 11-9 in the second quarter and was within 13 entering the fourth. Freshman Ellen Masalsky had nine points to lead Dedham, which finishes 2-17 but will not graduate a single player from its roster.

“We hung in there and kept our composure, we definitely belonged,” said Dedham coach Don Savi. “It was a good crowd, loud. This can only help us going forward, knowing that everyone has been here before.”

Champs prep with last-second win

It was a pretty good final two days of the regular season for the Dedham girls hockey team.

Last Wednesday, they learned they had earned a four-way share of the Bay State Conference Herget Division title thanks to Walpole’s 2-1 victory over Norwood.

A day later, the Marauders capped their slate with a dramatic 2-1 win of their own over Medway/Ashland as Kelly Celata struck shorthanded for the game-winner in the final seconds to send Dedham into the postseason with an 11-3-6 mark.

“I pulled Sam (Parr) and put Kelly out there with 20 seconds left and she hustled, grabbed the puck and took a slap shot just over the blue line,” said Dedham coach Don Parr, “It was a great way to finish, we didn’t want to face another dreaded draw.”

Meghan Dwan had the other Marauder goal in the win. Dedham was scheduled to host Walpole in a Division 2 South first round contest last night. The Marauders went 1-0-1 against the Rebels in BSC play this season. Dedham, Walpole, Wellesley and Milton all ended up in a four-way logjam at the top of the Herget to share the division title.

“It was our first one in five years so this would have been a group of seniors that would have graduated with experiencing a title so it was a great to get then one,” said Parr. “Almost every kid that has come through has played on a championship so I feel so great for the kids.”

St. Preux earns All-State berth

A small contingent represented Dedham at the Division 4 State Indoor Track Championship Friday at the Reggie Lewis Center and one will be moving on to All-States as junior Melissa St. Preux took third in a 55-meter dash.

St. Preux earns All-State berth

A small contingent represented Dedham at the Division 4 State Indoor Track Championship Friday at the Reggie Lewis Center and one will be moving on to All-States as junior Melissa St. Preux took third in a 55-meter dash.

St. Preux ran the second-best time in the preliminaries, 7.45 seconds, to qualify for the eight-person final. She followed up with a 7.47 in the final, finishing behind Briana Tran of South Hadley (7.27) and Alexandra Wheaton of Weston (7.35).

The third-place showing earned Dedham six points, putting them 26th overall as a team. St. Preux will enter tomorrow’s meet, also at the Reggie Lewis Center, as the 13th seed.

Two other Dedham girls competed. Lisa Joyce ran 1:48.27 took take 17th in the 600 and Lydia Caissy ran 47.21 in the 300 preliminaries, which did not advance her to the final

Nick Mazzola was the only Marauder boy to qualify, running 40.15 in the 300 in the preliminaries and failing to advance to the final.
