Boys hoop drops pair by a point
Just when the Dedham High boys basketball team had thoughts of a potential Herget Division run, failing to close out a pair of games put those chances on ice. The Marauders were held without a field goal over the last 7:14 and David Mykrantz knocked down a pair of free throws with 58 seconds left to push visiting Wellesley to a 48-47 win on Tuesday.
Nick Walch missed two free throws of his own with 46.5 seconds left and on the final drive drove the left baseline, but his shot would not fall and Wellesley’s Adam Farina eventually grabbed the ball following a scramble.
The Marauders (7-6, 5-6) were just 10-for-19 from the free-throw line while Wellesley was 9-for-11. Cam Clifford was the lone Marauder in double figures with 12 points.
On Friday, the Marauders led by one with 3.6 seconds left in overtime, but Ryan Welch was unable to hit the rim after intentionally trying to miss, resulting in an out of bounds play for Braintree. Dan O’Connell’s inbounds pass was deflected to an open Pat Delano for the game-winning layup with the buzzer sounding before Dedham could inbound the ball as the Wamps prevailed 67-66.
The result spoiled a big night for Walch, who scored 28, while Welch added 15 and Clifford 11. Scott Murphy limited the leading scorer in the conference, P.J. Douglas, to 10 points – none in the final quarter or overtime.
Girls hoop doesn’t go easily
The Marauders put up a fight against a pair of quality clubs but could not pin a loss on either, falling to unbeaten Wellesley 54-33 on Tuesday and to Braintree 40-25 last Friday.
After being suffering a 37-point rout at the hand of the Raiders in the first meeting, Dedham was within 12 points in the fourth quarter before the hosts pulled away. Jenna Savi paced the Marauders with 12 points while Ellen Masalsky added eight.
Dedham (2-10, 1-10 BSC) fell into a 17-3 hole before rallying within 22-19 at the half against the Wamps but could not keep up in the second. Savi and Emily Hill each had eight to lead the Marauders.

The Marauders were perfect from 160 pounds to heavyweight with Heaslip (160), Frank Mahoney (171) Boudreau (189), Brian Carilli (215) and Matt Richberg (285) all going 3-0 on the day.
