Boys hoop drops pair by a point

Just when the Dedham High boys basketball team had thoughts of a potential Herget Division run, failing to close out a pair of games put those chances on ice. The Marauders were held without a field goal over the last 7:14 and David Mykrantz knocked down a pair of free throws with 58 seconds left to push visiting Wellesley to a 48-47 win on Tuesday.

Nick Walch missed two free throws of his own with 46.5 seconds left and on the final drive drove the left baseline, but his shot would not fall and Wellesley’s Adam Farina eventually grabbed the ball following a scramble.

The Marauders (7-6, 5-6) were just 10-for-19 from the free-throw line while Wellesley was 9-for-11. Cam Clifford was the lone Marauder in double figures with 12 points.

On Friday, the Marauders led by one with 3.6 seconds left in overtime, but Ryan Welch was unable to hit the rim after intentionally trying to miss, resulting in an out of bounds play for Braintree. Dan O’Connell’s inbounds pass was deflected to an open Pat Delano for the game-winning layup with the buzzer sounding before Dedham could inbound the ball as the Wamps prevailed 67-66.

The result spoiled a big night for Walch, who scored 28, while Welch added 15 and Clifford 11. Scott Murphy limited the leading scorer in the conference, P.J. Douglas, to 10 points – none in the final quarter or overtime.

Dedham (2-10, 1-10 BSC) fell into a 17-3 hole before rallying within 22-19 at the half against the Wamps but could not keep up in the second. Savi and Emily Hill each had eight to lead the Marauders.

Boys hockey blanked, edged

The Marauders remain in search of their first BSC victory, suffering a 9-0 blanking at the hands of Braintree on Saturday and a 3-1 loss to Walpole last Wednesday.

Dedham played well in the opening half of the period before the roof caved in starting with a blocked shot going straight back to the initial shooter. The Wamps added two more to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission and made it 7-0 after two.

Danny Riley made a strong individual move midway through the first period against the Rebels, splitting the defense on a 1-on-2 rush and scoring to tie the game at 1-1. Visiting Walpole scored with 2:26 left in the first, however, to take the lead for good and spoil the first varsity start for Chris Dempsey, who made 29 saves.
