While the Dedham High girls basketball team played the majority of the season with the safety net of the Sullivan Rule underneath it, the Marauders are hoping that a strong finish will replace it with a trampoline that springs them into the Division 3 South tournament with force.
Dedham wrapped up the regular season with a 51-30 victory over Milton last Friday, finishing with a 10-10 mark that made its previous tourney qualification through Div. 3 competition moot.
“That was our goal at the beginning of the season,” said Dedham coach Don Savi. “Once we clinched after the first two games, we said, ‘Let’s get 10’. That was our call all along and for a while it didn’t look like that, but we were in lot of close games and in the last five games we won four of them. Hopefully, we are playing our best basketball right now.”
Though Dedham will be making its sixth consecutive postseason appearance, the win over the Wildcats gave the Marauders their first 10-win season since the 2008-09 campaign.
Senior Jenna Savi, who was recently named to the Bay State Conference All-Star team, shook off a scoreless first period to score 15 of her game-high 21 points in the second quarter, and the Marauders put the game away by ending the third quarter with an 18-0 run.
Dedham actually trailed 10-9 after one, but Savi gave Dedham the lead for good with a jumper from the right baseline. Savi scored 15 of the Marauders 18 points in the second, including going 7-of-8 from the line, to help give Dedham a 27-19 lead at the break.
Milton’s Katie Krauss opened the third by hitting a jumper, but the Marauders held the visitors scoreless the rest of the quarter as a Libby Masalsky 3-pointer kicked off a string of 18 straight Dedham points for a comfortable 45-21 lead through three periods.
“I thought our defense was tremendous, and it made our offense go,” said coach Savi. “It made us play faster when we got turnovers.”
Junior Ellen Masalsky, who received an honorable mention on the BSC All-Star team, had nine points and eight rebounds. Senior Sarah Warjas, who was honored along with Jenna Savi on Senior Night, filled the stat sheet for a second straight contest with four points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists.
The only bad news on the night for the Marauders was the unavailability of freshman Jenn Wadman, who injured her thumb in the win over Walpole, shortening an already small Dedham bench.
Dedham is expected to receive a first round matchup on the road when the MIAA releases the basketball pairings tomorrow.
“We won’t be intimidated by anybody,” said coach Savi. “Win or lose, we won’t be intimidated. All year we have played teams that are pretty good, so we are looking forward to it right now.”
