Schools: Westwood track sweeps the field

The Westwood High boys track team swept six different individual events in a decisive 93-43 win over Medway yesterday, upping their mark to 5-2 on the season.

Stuart Leibson and Eric Peterson took the top two spots in a pair of events. Leibson cleared 5-feet, 9-inches in the high to qualify for states, with Peterson and Chris Pond completing the sweep. Leibson (17-6), Peterson and Kris Brakke also turned the trick in the long jump. Brakke also led a 300 hurdles sweep in 44.3, followed by Matt Kenney and Michael Burton.

John Cuozzo (55.2), Dan Abbott and Brendan Leahy went 1-2-3 in the 400, as did Yuanwen Liang (24.5), Tom Coyle and Ailton Caravalho in the 200 and Ryan Bowler (143-8), Jim Flibin, Ed Perkins in the javelin.

Tom Weinreich won the 110 hurdles in 15.8 and had seconds in the 100 and triple jump. Westwood also got individual wins from Alex Kjellman in the 800 (2:11.4) and Fadi Samaha in the shot put (41-6 1/2). Mike Fafara took second in the shot put and discus.

Westwood added a 4x100 relay win as Liang, Kyle Tucke, Brain O’Connor and Mike Hallion ran a season-best 46.6.

GIRLS TRACK
Westwood 94, Medway 42

Corrine Wells and Laura Teehan each won a pair of individual events to help power the Wolverines past the Blackhawks and improve to 4-3 on the season.

Wells was first in both the 100 and the 100 hurdles while Teehan set the pace in the 200 and 400. Kristina Maimonis won the javelin and was also second in the 300 hurdles while Claire Daniels took the discus competition.

Hannah Robinson was a part of a pair of winning relay squads. She joined Callee Donovan, Megan Isberg and Victoria Koutris to win the 4x100 and combined with Anniemarie O’Flaherty, Christine Koutris and Nicole Campion for a 4x400 win.

BOYS TENNIS
Walpole 4, Milton 1

A sweep in the doubles led the Rebels past the Wildcats and to 6-4 on the season, 5-4 in the BSC.

Adam Riegel and James DeCelle won a pair of tiebreaker to win 7-6 (11-9), 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) at second doubles over Connor Bailey and Zack Tachka. Chris Johnson and Mike Flaherty were also doubles winners, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1

Dean Cohn (6-3, 6-2) and Zach Hagopian (6-4, 6-3) were straight sets winners at the top two doubles spots.

Natick 4, Dedham 1

Matt Carney earned the Marauders’ lone point with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Tyler Glenn at No. 1 singles.

Natick rolled at the other four spots as Dedham (2-9, 2-7) could only muster 12 games with the top doubles tandem of Gianluca Morele and Dom Poncia falling 6-4, 6-2.

Medfield 3, Westwood 2

The Wolverines’ Tri-Valley League title hopes took a big hit with a loss to the Warriors yesterday as they fell to 7-2 on the season.

Westwood took a pair of points at singles as Corey DelloRusso triumphed over Alex Kerisiotis in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, at third singles while Christian Heaney-Secord cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at first. But Medfield put the match away by pulling out a pair of three-setters at doubles.

St. John’s (S) 5, Xaverian 0

The Hawks fell to 6-3 overall with a loss to the perennially powerful Pioneers. Xaverian fell in straight sets in all five matches, although Brian Quigley battled to a first set tiebreaker in his 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 loss to Dan Rider at second singles.

GIRLS TENNIS
Medfield 4, Westwood 1

After giving the rival Warriors a stern test in the first meeting, the Wolverines were no match in the rematch as Westwood dropped to 7-3 on the season.

The second doubles pair of Sarah Chen and Kelley Steeves claimed the Wolverines only point, rallying from a set down to beat Olivia Faro and Nicole Paratonschi 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Medfield sweep the singles and took first doubles in straight sets.

Natick 3, Dedham 2

A shorthanded Marauders club fell back below .500 at 5-6 with yesterday loss to the Raiders.

With Annie Tannous out sick, regular doubles partner Kayla Cammata moved up to singles and pulled off a three-set win at No. 3 over Sasha Vagodnaya, 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4. Beth Kempton was also a 6-1, 6-4 singles winner at No. 2, but the Marauders fell just short of the singles sweep when Stephanie Wong downed Caitie Callahan in three sets at first singles.

Natick took both doubles matches in straight sets.

Wellesley 5, Norwood 0

The Raiders kept the Mustangs winless on the season. Second singles player Jaime Lewis took three games from Jane Marchetti for Norwood, which was forced to default at second doubles.

VOLLEYBALL
Brookline 3, Norwood 0

The Mustangs fell to one of the Bay State Conference’s best in three straight (25-16, 25-12, 25-16) to fall to 5-8 on the season. Matt Clifford led Norwood with nine kills.
