Norwood High boys track coach Jim Forrest left Murray Field yesterday knowing his team would not be taking home another Bay State Conference Herget championship yesterday. He also left knowing that his squad left all they had on the track.

The Mustangs knew they would likely need to beat both Natick and Milton in their final two dual meet to grab a share of the division title with Walpole and the Redmen ended those hopes yesterday with a 79-51 win, dropping Norwood to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the division and cementing the outright title for the Rebels.

“Of course I am disappointed, but not disappointed in the way we competed,” said Forrest. “We have lived on the seniors all year and they stepped up and did everything that they could. I’m surprised that Natick has lost at all, from what I saw they were the best team we have run against. Not to take anything away from Walpole, but they have some great athletes.”

Norwood was paced by the duo of Alex Webber and Rob Thornton, who each ran personal bests (15.7/15.8) in going 1-2 in the 110-meter hurdles. Webber, who was fighting off illness, also added a second in the 300 hurdles while Thornton placed in four individual events with a second in the triple jump and the long jump and a third in the 200.

Mike O’Brien won the 400 in 53.2. Norwood got personal best from Steve Curley and Dan Cubelli in going 2-3 in the 2-mile. Rob Stanton had second in the mile while Josh Mergl was third the 300 hurdles.

Lee added a fourth in the triple jump to her win. Devereux was also second in the triple jump and fourth in the 300 hurdles, Rafttrey was second in the 100 and fourth in the long jump while Watkins took second in the shot put.

Alison Nadeau placed in three events, helping the 4x400 relay to a second along with taking a second on the 800 and third in the high jump individually.
