Based on the performances alone it would have been a successful day for the Dedham High girls track team last Thursday at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center but the Marauders picked up the bonus their first victory of the year, downing rival Norwood, 65-30, to improve to 1-3 on the season.
"It was a fun meet. We only have 27 kids so sometimes its hard to match up with teams, but we matched up pretty well with Norwood," said Dedham coach Frank Barbuto. "We were happy to get the win. The league is so tough and just keeps getting better. Almost across the board we had personal records."
Dedham was paced by senior captain Kerianne Downing, who placed in four individual events, while junior Kerri Kelleher and sophomore Andrea Bradbury each posted a win and a second place for the Marauders.
Downing’s victory came in the high jump in 4 feet, 8 inches. The Marauders’ leading scorer, who has been battling a hamstring injury with winter, also picked up a second in both the 55-meter hurdles and long jump and a third in the 55 dash.
Kelleher submitted personal bests in winning the long jump in 15-5 3/4 and finishing runner-up in the dash. Bradbury led a key sweep in the hurdles, running a personal best 10.13 seconds, followed by Downing and junior Allison Martin, and was also second to Downing in the high jump. Both Kelleher and Bradbury have given the Marauders a big lift in their first indoor seasons.
"They have both been terrific additions," said Barbuto.
Dedham won seven on the 10 individual events in all. Sophomore Unity Jean-Louis won a duel in the shot put with Norwood’s Adaze Izeko to stay undefeated on the year, throwing a personal best 33-8 to take the shot put, the third-best effort in the Bay State Conference of the day.
Sophomore Mary Kate Coughlin ran in 3:26.15 in the 1,000 and senior Taylor Roberts posted 47.27 in the 300, both personal best that were good for wins. Sophomore Jillian Lawless’ competed in the 2-mile for the first time and brought home a win in 14:36.21.
The Dedham 4x400 team of Coughlin, Taylor Roberts, Bradbury and Kelleher was also victorious.
The Marauders were coming off a good showing at the MSTCA Division 4 state relays the previous weekend, earning seven points to tie for 14th overall.
The 4x50 hurdles team of Kelleher, Maeve Feeeney, Bradbury had the top finish, running 31.16 to finish third behind Old Rochester (30.18) and Ipswich. Jean-Louis, Roberts and Caillyn Brennan combined to take sixth in the shot put.
Dedham followed up the Norwood win with a trip to the Paul Davey Freshman and Sophomore Meet in Franklin on Monday, where the Marauders had a number of high finishes,
Jean-Louis won the shot put in 31-10, Bradbury had a second in the high jump and a third in the 55 hurdles while Coughlin was also third in the mile.
The boys remained winless with a 79-15 loss to the Mustangs. Junior Jack McCorrison picked up Dedham’s lone win with an 8.80 in the 55 hurdles, while the Marauders got seconds from Sean Kineavy in the 600 and Daniel Sullivan in the 2-mile.
