After playing Wellesley in a very defensive game to open the season, the Dedham High boys basketball team struggled to contain the Raiders attack on Tuesday, losing 72-38, in a Bay State Conference Herget Division matchup.

Wellesley (7-4, 6-3) had 10 of the 11 players on the roster get on the score sheet, as they have continued to develop in the offensive end this season. The Raiders won the season opener, 46-33, but struggled in the offensive end.

"We turned the ball over 20 times last time, and our improvements have just been from working on it in practice," Wellesley coach Glen Magpiong said. "We have really been sharing the basketball now."

Roberts led all scorers with 15 points, and Mack Jones chipped in with 11.

"When Roberts comes to play, he is one of our top guys," said Wellesley captain Matt Lawrence. "We really rely on him to set the tone and bring the physicality. He stepped up tonight. "

Lawrence added 11 points himself, nine of which came by way of the 3-pointer. He was 3-for-4 from beyond the arc and all four of those attempts came from the left side.

Dedham (3-10, 1-8) struggled offensively, but there were a few bright spots. Patrick Maloney (13 points) and Jeremy Clifford (11 points) both hit some shots, but they didn’t take as many as they would have liked.

"Jeremy is an extremely unselfish player, so we need more guys to be making plays around him too," said Dedham coach Chris Fraioli, whose squad has lost six straight.

The game was Maloney’s final high school game because he is having surgery on Friday.

"I am glad that he at least got to end his high school career on a strong individual note," Fraioli said.

Dedham was able to draw first blood as Maloney drained a 3-pointer on the first shot of the game, but unfortunately for the Marauders, Wellesley went on a 17-3 run after that led by Lawrence and Roberts.

Clifford put a bit of a spark into the Dedham offense though with seven points in the first quarter to bring the game back into reach, 19-10.

Wellesley brought its defense in the second quarter only allowing four points as Lawrence and Roberts helped lock down the defensive end.

"If we play defense like this every game, we are going to be able to win a lot of games," Magpiong said.

While Dedham struggled to score, the Raiders had no problems on that end of the court. Wellesley’s offense kept chugging along in the second quarter as they had five different scorers, and led, 37-14, at the half.

"It ultimately comes down to us being able to defend," Fraioli said. "Normally defense has been one of our strengths, but unfortunately for us it wasn’t in this game."

In the second half, the reserves came in for Wellesley, but little changed as the Raiders continued to dominate both sides of the ball.

On Friday, Dedham dropped a 68-58 contest to Braintree as the visiting Wamps closed the game on a 14-3 run.
