To the voters or non-voters in Dedham: I was most disappointed that the override failed. We, the senior citizens, have been lead down the path yet another time by lack of interest and, yes, selfishness.
We were asked to do an override to purchase the Striar Property and that has turned out to be a somewhat useless project. We were encouraged to pass an override to purchase the property on Common Street for the Department of Parks and Recreation. After all this, we, the seniors, have lost out yet again.
The space that we have available would not be fit for a group that is actually quite large in number. The parking is totally inadequate. In fact, if it weren’t for the Friends of the Council on Aging, who are volunteers, and the small paid staff, we wouldn’t have any programs. Many seniors volunteer delivering Meals on Wheels, help with flu clinics and blood pressure clinics, and volunteer with the medical reserve corps. We give willingly and cheerfully of ourselves and our time. Smaller towns treat their seniors far better than our town.
Remember, someday you all will become older and might appreciate the programs that could be offered to increase the quality of life. I hope that those who voted against the override are lucky enough to be wealthy enough and have enough family around to help when needed.
I will think very hard about passing over any other overrides for this town that I have lived in for all but six months of my life. I got a good education in Dedham Schools, made many good friends and have enjoyed good health. Think hard about the consequences of the vote last Saturday.
