DEDHAM —

Many MCAS stories in the media have a “bad news” component to them. Thank you, reporter Keith Ferguson, for writing a “good news” MCAS story.

As a biology teacher at Dedham High, I’d like to point out that Dedham’s excellent science MCAS scores were a team effort. Other science teachers who were responsible for these results include Laura McFarland, Linda Kobierski, and Carolyn Pettey. In addition, our special education teachers and our ESOL teacher, Connie Mannal, were key members of this team. Eighty-six percent of our special education students scored at “advanced” or “proficient,” and all our ESOL students passed.

Furthermore, our alternative education and industrial technology teachers did a superb job; all their tenth-grade students who took the exam passed.

Lastly, because of the wonderful job of our principal and vice principals, we have an orderly and well-run school that allows teachers to spend more time teaching and less time on disciplinary issues.
