NORWOOD —

We in Massachusetts know that progress is achieved by working together to solve problems. We have an opportunity to make significant progress if we use our collective muscle to fight one of the most widespread issues facing our communities: dental disease. By enacting Senate Bill 2819, Massachusetts can make sure that fighting dental disease remains a top priority. This bill, recently passed unanimously by the Senate, awaits action by the House of Representatives.

Oral Health is an essential component of overall health. Dental disease the most common, chronic childhood disease is caused by bacterial infection and can affect basic activities such as speaking, eating, learning, and working. Fortunately, it is almost entirely preventable when access to preventive and restorative care is available. In adulthood, the consequences become more severe. Dental disease is associated with stroke, heart disease, complications with diabetes, and the delivery of premature babies

Norwood has illustrated that we can make progress when we work together to make oral health a priority. The Health Department provides basic dental services for school-aged children grades one through sixth through a school-based clinic and the Elder Dental Program, a community based, non-profit program founded by dentists Stephen Stone, DMD and Mark Stone, DMD, MScD.

Norwood is making progress in stamping out dental disease and the state should follow suit. Thanks to the leadership of Senator Harriette Chandler and Representative John Scibak, there is great support in the legislature for Senate Bill 2819. If enacted, this bill would increase access to dental care and strengthen the state’s oral health infrastructure.

I urge the House of Representatives to take action swiftly on this important bill.
