On Saturday morning while I was driving down High street, I saw dozens of residents holding their candidates signs and waving to supporters. What I particularly took notice of though, was that among Mr. Shapiro’s supporters were some familiar faces that already sit on one board or another in Westwood. In front of the post office the three candidates were handing out their literature. That is when I noticed on the back of Mr. Shapiro's pamphlet it said, “Paid for by the Committee to elect Phil Shapiro with Anthony Antonellis as chairman.” I guess Mr Antonellis feels the need to handpick his own candidate and to influence with other board members the outcome of the election.
I decided the next day to go to the Meet the Candidates Day presented and held by the League of Woman Voters.
There were three candidates for selectman present, Doug Obey, Greg Angnew, and Phil Shapiro. Mr. Shapiro made it be known that he was running for two offices in town: auditor and selectman. I’m not sure if Mr. Shapiro really wants to be a selectman or if it was something the present Board of Selectman talked him into. Why else would he be running for two positions in the town?
Remember that every candidate is taking time out of his or her busy life to help us, the residents of the town. We owe it to the candidates to get out there and vote on Election Day so that they can be our voices.
