NORWOOD —

Candace Leary, in her July 11 column, states: “Many…have begun to accept that a new Norwood High School will be built behind the present stately structure and that the beautiful old building that is an important symbol in so many lives will eventually be reduced to rubble. Nothing can change that now. The train has left the station.”

However, if it has left, it has no idea where it’s headed. And that’s bad!

When the MSBA’s decision in favor of a new school was announced, I requested info that was used (I assume) in arriving at that decision. The package included a three-page summary of an assessment/evaluation done by an independent architectural/engineering firm and paid for by the MSBA. The report stated that: “While the building appears to be ‘tired’ and uninspiring, it does not appear to be obsolete and in need of total replacement.”

How did the MSBA arrive at such a decision? Did other factors influence the decision? Just asking! It sure as heck puzzles me!

In conclusion, I would suggest that the train has not left the station...and that it stay there until more “real facts” are disclosed. What about the “model school” design?

Sounds very appealing. Why does the town insist on retaining Symmes, Maini & McKee? The MSBA published a list of ten award-winning school architects and SMMA was not among them. Why not pick a winner? By the way, Bill Maini grew up in Norwood and graduated from NHS. Just an observation.

To the citizens and taxpayers: Please ask questions, request info and learn as much as you can about what’s going on behind the scenes relative to the NHS project When it comes time for the override, you’ll be mighty glad that you did.
