If Wegmans wants to come to Westwood that’s fine, no one is stopping them. It’s time Wegmans steps to the plate and decides that they are coming to Westwood Station or they are not. Is Westwood Station just one big glass house? It’s hard to believe that Wegmans would base their decision to come to Westwood over a beer and wine license and not the merits of Westwood Station.
At our next Town Meeting I would not be surprised to see the Selectmen asking the residents to accept more off-premise licenses. It’s not fair to Lambert’s, High Street Market, Roche Brothers, or anyone to have a monopoly in Westwood. This has been the Selectmen stance on this issue. There should also be no backdoor deals made when it comes to off-premise licenses.
I have heard the word competition many times over the past few weeks but in reality our town prohibited anyone from competing for the one and only off-premise license. The town also took the path of least resistance when it came to passing the Wegmans off-premise license by not putting it on the ballot.
You cannot compare 29 percent feedback from a ballot to 7 percent at Town Meeting. If the Selectman really want to do the will of the people they can still put it on the November ballot and get over 90 percent feedback from the voters of Westwood. This, I believe, would force any state representative to move forward on this home rule petition because it would show the true will of the people of Westwood.
