NORWOOD —

A single-family home on Lane Drive sustained about $100,000 damage in a Friday night fire in which two people were injured.

Firefighters arrived at 85 Lane Drive around 7:39 p.m. and found smoke coming from the eaves.

Three people who lived in the home escaped. One man suffered burns on his arms and smoke inhalation. He was taken to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, said Fire Department spokesman George Morrice. A woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to Caritas Norwood Hospital. The third person was unhurt.

Fire investigator Bill Turner has determined the cause of the fire to be accidental from a grease fire on the stove.

Firefighters from Walpole, Canton, Sharon and Foxboro helped fight the blaze. The Walpole and Wrentham departments sent ambulances.

Morrice said Capt. Kevin Romines' crew had to break into the home because the front door was dead-bolted.

At first firefighters were hampered in their efforts by heavy black smoke and heat, said Morrice. Ladder crews ventilated the home improving firefighting conditions.

"Once you introduce oxygen, the flames get going again and it's easier to pinpoint the source and attack it," said Morrice.

"Some of the guys said they said they couldn't see a thing," he said.

The fire was concentrated in the kitchen and living room.

Morrice said firefighter/EMTs from the town's Basic Life Support ambulance helped locate and extinguish the fire by running a second water line from Engine 2.

Morrice said it is standard procedure during working fires to send both of the town's two ambulances to the scene. Morrice said the Advanced Life Support ambulance and its paramedics were able to handle the medical issues, freeing up the crew from the second ambulance to help out fighting the fire.

"It's such a great thing to have these people cross-trained so that in a situation like this, not only are they there as EMT's, but they can go in as trained firefighters and they know what they're doing," said Morrice. "I don't want to toot our own horn too much, but I honestly think that's one of the reasons we knock down these fires so quickly in Norwood."

Fire Chief Mike Howard estimates the damage to be approximately $100,000.
