Dedham Police said they arrested several sleeping suspects on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol on the weekend of June 18.

On Friday, June 18, at 7:46 p.m. Officer Joshua Blaney was sent to Quincy Avenue and Dale Street for a report of a man slumped over the steering wheel of a red pickup truck, said Lt. Robert Nedder. Officer Blaney approached the driver’s side window of the red 2002 Toyota Tundra and saw Mark Mandeville, 56, of 37 Harding Road in Walpole passed out behind the wheel, Nedder said.

After a while Blaney was able to wake Mandeville, who smelled moderately of alcohol, failed field sobriety tests, and was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, Nedder said. Mandeville pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Dedham District Court on June 21, and is due back there for a pretrial hearing July 22, he added.

On Saturday, June 19, at 7:35 a.m., Officer Kenneth Ellis was sent to Berkeley Road on a report of a vehicle with two sleeping occupants in the middle of the road. Arriving there he saw a white 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse with two men inside, both asleep in reclined seats, Nedder said.

Ellis opened the door and could immediately smell alcohol, and took the keys out of the ignition, Nedder said. The driver, 18-year-old Jose Aguilar, opened his eyes and then closed them, but was finally roused and said he had not been in an accident, Nedder said.

However, the Mitsubishi appeared to be damaged underneath its front end and on its front bumper, and a blue 1991 Mercury Tracer that was parked about 35 feet away was also damaged, Nedder said. There was fresh fluid underneath the Mitsubishi, which was not drivable in Ellis’s opinion, Nedder added.

Aguilar said that he had been drinking earlier, and after he failed field sobriety tests he was arrested for drunk driving, Nedder said.

Aguilar, of 101 Intervale St. Apt. 2 in Dorchester, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Dedham District Court June 21, and is due back there for a pretrial hearing July 21, Nedder said.

The day after the Aguilar incident, Scott Kanach, 23, of 75 Hastings Road was arrested on the same charge, Nedder said. On June 20 at 4:45 a.m., Ellis went to Hooper Road to help other police units that were involved in a domestic assault and battery case, and he saw a black 2008 Ford Fusion parked on Bonham Road, with its headlights and brake lights on. Ellis said he thought the driver might be waiting to pick up the suspects police were looking for, Nedder said.

Ellis saw Kanach asleep in a reclined seat, though the Ford was running and was in drive, Nedder said. Ellis repeatedly knocked on the window and eventually was able to wake Kanach, he added.

“The officer opened the door and told him to place the vehicle in park. Instead, the driver turned the volume control knob on the radio,” Nedder recounted.

Ellis detected an alcoholic odor, and after Kanach failed field sobriety tests, he arrested him, Nedder said. Kanach pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Dedham District Court June 21, and is due back there for a pretrial hearing July 15, he said.

Nedder said on the night of June 21, police arrested the two people they were looking for when Ellis found Kanach.

On June 20 at 4:14 a.m., Susan Callanan, 44, of Hooper Road and Jake Callanan, 18, of 385 Normandy Drive in Norwood were involved in an assault at a house on Hooper, Nedder said. The victim was not badly hurt but was taken to Norwood Hospital for evaluation, he said.

Police obtained Dedham District Court warrants for domestic assault and battery for both Callanans, and on June 21, shortly after 7:45 p.m., Officer Richard Flint stopped a green Dodge Neon at Hooper Road and Louise Road and arrested Jake Callanan, who was in the back seat, Nedder said. He said his mother was home, and police went there and arrested her as well, Nedder added.

Both Callanans were arraigned in Dedham District Court June 22, pleading not guilty, and are due back there for a pretrial hearing Aug. 12, Nedder said.
