2009 Year in Review: Teachers’ contract talks go on, and on

THE STORY: A second full year passes without a new contract agreement between the town’s teachers union and the School Committee. The talks, which began in Jan. 2008, enter mediation in March 2009. Unit A of the Dedham Education Association, which also represents nurses, uses “work to rule” during the 2008-09 school year, then drops that strategy in September as a goodwill gesture “to help create a climate where an agreement might be more likely.” But a contract settlement still proves elusive.
