Police said they arrested Jemall Bell, 26, of 33 Saint Rose St. Apt. 609 in Jamaica Plain, on charges of intimidation of a witness after officials discovered he has been impersonating his brother in court for about a year.
On the morning of Tuesday, Dec. 15, an assistant district attorney prosecuting a hit-and-run accident case from Stoughton in Dedham District Court told a responding police officer that Bell has been appearing in court as a defendant, but it was actually his brother who was involved in the incident, said Lt. Robert Nedder.
A witness realized that Bell wasn’t the same person she originally identified as a suspect – and confirmed that by looking at the booking photo at the courthouse, Nedder said.
You can be charged with intimidation of a witness if you mislead a police officer, or lie to a court official, Nedder explained. Bell was arraigned that same day in court on the charge, pleading not guilty, and is due back for a pretrial hearing Jan. 7.
