An employee at a Dedham Square business said she was working when she heard a child scream outside. When she went out to investigate, she saw a mother and young child in the middle of the street on the ground.

Dedham Police Lt. Robert Nedder said a 35-year-old Sharon woman and her young son were hit by a Chevy van driven by a 41-year-old Quincy man around 10:35 a.m. Nedder said the incident is under investigation, but it looks like she was in the crosswalk between Cafe Fresh Bagel and Wardle's Pharmacy, walking toward Wardle's with her son in arms, when she was hit by the van.

Nedder said both "were injured, but at this time neither injury appears life-threatening."

Leonard C. Shwom, of A New Gopen Optical on High Street, said when the ambulance arrived, the mother and her son were briefly treated by paramedics at the eyewear shop. They were both taken to Norwood Hospital, Shwom said.

Nedder said there could be charges against the driver - criminal, civil, or both  - depending on the outcome of the investigation.
