What is it?: Candidates for Dedham’s major offices were required to file their initial campaign finance reports by April 1 – providing a glimpse into their fundraising and spending as we get closer to the town election this Saturday.

Let’s break it down

Biggest fundraiser and spender: Sarah MacDonald, the chairman of the Board of Selectmen. She reported bringing in $8,415 and spending $4,056 during the period between Jan. 1 and March 31 – totals that easily eclipsed those of any other candidate. Her six largest contributors gave $500 each, the maximum that an individual or political action committee can give a candidate in Massachusetts. They included two carpenters unions, a floorcovers union, Lloyd and Roberta Gainsboro of Dedham Health & Athletic Club, Arthur Gregory of Woods End Road, and Christine Coughlin, the wife of former state Rep. Bob Coughlin, who is the CEO of MassBio, where MacDonald works. Bob Coughlin gave $200.

The other $500 contributions: Selectman Paul Reynolds, like MacDonald, received $500 from Carpenters Local Union 67 in Dorchester. He also reported getting $500 from his twin brother, Peter.

George Panagopoulos, a challenger for the Board of Selectmen, reported that his largest donors were his parents, Maria and Andreas Panagopoulos of Margaret Road, who own the Dedham House of Pizza, which he manages. He also received $500 from Sotirios Pappas of Mansfield.

Largest single expense: The $932 that Reynolds said he spent on signs from Richards Advertising in Dorchester. The union sign company appears frequently in the candidates’ reports.

Most fun “in-kind” contributions: This distinction goes to Panagopoulos, who listed “pizza for sign holders” from Dedham House of Pizza. The three separate contributions were worth a total of $162.

Largest outstanding liabilities: Chuck DelloIacono reported liabilities of $1,922 from his last campaign, in 2009. He lost his seat on the Parks and Recreation Commission then but is trying to get back on the board this weekend.

Who has the most money on hand for the final week of the election: Not surprisingly, that is MacDonald, who reported having a balance of $7,663. Next up were Susan Butler Walko for School Committee ($2,736), John Maida for School Committee ($1,854), and Reynolds ($1,686).

Note: All “cents” amounts have been rounded up or down. And there was no report available for selectman candidate Robert O’Connell.
