DEDHAM —

Police arrested a United Parcel Service driver and another man and charged them with larceny over $250 and conspiracy to commit larceny after UPS in Norwood noticed that cell phones slated for delivery were going missing.

Nedder said UPS or a representative saw UPS truck driver Victor Lemos, 42, of 149 Walnut St., East Providence, R.I., behind the Registry of Deeds in Dedham giving something to a man later identified as Gennady Avras, 47, of 320 Dudley Road, Newton.

UPS notified police, and on Monday morning Norwood and Dedham police set up surveillance on Lemos' truck. Nedder said Lemos was seen driving past stores in Dedham where he was supposed to make deliveries.

After getting coffee, Lemos ended up on Clark Street, where Avras arrived in the same silver Lexus that had been seen in the earlier meeting by the Registry. Avras went into the UPS truck, left it carrying several boxes, and returned to his Lexus, Nedder said.

Avras then drove to an automotive specialty store in Hyde Park, where a detective spotted the UPS packages in his back seat and arrested Avras as he left the store, Nedder said.

Lemos was arrested several blocks south of Clark Street on Van Brunt Avenue, Nedder said.

In all, police recovered stolen property valued at $2,900, including wireless routers and a number of cell phones.
