The following Waltham students were recipients of the James J. Cannon Memorial Scholarship: KELLY ALBANESE and KATHRYN MILLS, in education, and RYAN WHITE, in law enforcement.
As part of Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall's ongoing Pond Renovation Project, a sitting area near the entrance to campus was recently completed. With its granite benches, providing trees, and neatly laid brick, the area will be used to hold classes, such as the studio art class pictured in the attached photograph. The entire Pond Renovation Project includes the trimming of trees, the addition of a second sitting area near the library, hydroraking (removing the aquatic plants) of the pond, and the installation of a fountain. Funded through the generosity of current parents of students at CH-CH, the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of this May.
Syracuse grads
The following area students were among the academic degree candidates honored at Syracuse University's 149th commencement ceremony. Approximately 4,800 degree candidates along with their families and friends attended the ceremony presided over by Chancellor Kenneth A. Shaw.

Bozak on dean's list
AMY LYNNE BOZAK daughter of Peggy and Joe Bozak of WALTHAM was named to the Dean's List at Emmanuel College, Boston. She is majoring in Art Therapy with a minor in Art History.
LeFort has busy freshman year
MATTHEW T. LEFORT just completed his freshman year at the University of Southern New Hampshire in Manchester in the School of Culinary Arts. He was named to the dean's list for the second semester. He was also elected vice president of his class for the upcoming academic year. He is the son of Thomas and Joanne LeFort of WALTHAM.
Majkut receives excellence award
MELANIE MAJKUT, originally from WALTHAM, received the American College of Health Care Executives (ACHE) 2003 Student Excellence in Leadership Award at Stonehill College. A health care administration major, Majkut serves as president of the ACHE chapter at Stonehill and is credited with reactivating and promoting the chapter on campus. She also is a member of the Health Care Society at the college.
The Student Excellence in Leadership Award recognizes ACHE student affiliates who have significantly contributed toward the advancement of health care leadership skills in an academic setting and the achievement of the goals of ACHE.
Dean's list at Northeastern
Northeastern University has announced the following local students were named to the university's dean's list for the winter quarter 2003, which ended in March.

John Hopkins dean's list
IRUN BHAN of WEST NEWTON, son of Mr. and Mrs. Atul Kumar Ghan, was named to the dean's list for the spring 2003 semester at The Johns Hopkins University. Bhan, who is majoring in biology, is expected to graduate in May 2004.
Environmental award winner
As part of the annual Earth Day celebrations, Environmental Affairs Secretary Ellen Roy Herzfelder announced the winners of the ninth annual Secretary's Awards for Excellence in Environmental Education at a ceremony held in the Great Hall of the State House. The Secretary's Awards are given to teachers and administrators who have made significant contributions to the field of environmental education in Massachusetts over the past year.
A Certificate of Merit was awarded to JOAN YASI of the Bigelow Middle School in NEWTON for a school-wide recycling program.
Cunningham makes dean's list

Cuttone wins scholarship
KRISTEN CUTTONE, a 2003 graduate of Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall School, recently was awarded a $2,500 Presidential Scholarship by Johnson & Wales University. These scholarships were awarded to students who have applied and been accepted to the University and have demonstrated academic excellence in their high school years. Cuttone's award is renewable for up to four years, for a total of $10,000.
Cuttone is the daughter of Vincent and Sandra Cuttone of Smith Street, WALTHAM.
Students in Italy
Three NEWTON residents are spending the spring semester studying in Florence, Italy, through Syracuse University's Division of International Programs Abroad. They include: ALYSON FREEDMAN, a junior majoring in international relations at George Washington University; RACHEL WEBBER, a junior majoring in history at Barnard College; and SARA HODGDON, a junior majoring in finance at George Washington University.
Parad performs
ELIZA PARAD of NEWTON, a freshman at Connecticut College, recently performed on bassoon in a concert, "The Class of 2003 Soloists." This concert by the Connecticut College Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble was sponsored by the Connecticut College Department. Parad is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Parad and a 2002 graduate of Newton North High School.

Dean's list for Chin
JOHNNY CHIN, a second-year student at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, has been named to the dean's list for the first semester of the 2002-03 academic year. He is the son of Bing and Carolina Chin of NEWTON .
Dakss initiated into Alpha Delta Omicron
Each spring the Alpha Delta Omicron chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for two-year colleges, conducts ceremonies to initiate students who have maintained a 3.70 or higher grade point average. ALISON DAKSS of WALTHAM was one of the initiatives.
To be considered for initiation, students must have completed 24 credits at the college.
