A police officer was hospitalized Wednesday when his motorcycle collided with a van pulling out onto a busy Main Street.

Officer Scott Koenig was treated at Caritas Norwood Hospital for bumps, bruises and a potential leg injury, according to police.

"All in all, under the circumstances, he looked to be pretty fortunate," Deputy Police Chief Scott Bushway said.

Koenig was riding to the Rocky's Ace Hardware plaza on Main Street at 1:45 p.m. to help other officers on a call about a suspicious person.

He got stuck in traffic just before he got to the plaza, said Bushway.

Koenig went to pass the traffic on the left when he slammed into a Dodge Caravan that was taking a left from the plaza lot onto Main Street, the deputy chief said.

Officers who witnessed the accident said Koenig was shaken up after, but it looked like he was going to be all right.

Accident reconstruction teams on Main Street marked the motorcycle's travel directly in the center of the highway, overlapping the striped lane markers, Wednesday afternoon.

Bushway said he didn't believe the other driver was injured.

The van's front-end was smashed in the collision. Officers had trouble starting Koenig's Harley-Davidson motorcycle, but it did not appear damaged.

The accident occurred just three hours after an 80-year-old woman drove her car through a Main Street shopping center storefront.
