WALPOLE —

A woman who spotted someone lurking in some bushes helped lead police to the man believed to be responsible for numerous break-ins in the area.

Kam Ausar, also known as Jeffrey Alston and Tracy Alston, 41, of 114 Gordon Ave., Providence, R.I., was charged Monday night with receiving stolen property, possession of a burglar's tool, attempting to commit a crime, and possession of marijuana.

Police Chief Richard Stillman said Tuesday that Ausar is responsible for "numerous breaks all up and down the (Interstate) 95 corridor."

Those break-ins include four in East Walpole and eight in Sharon, the chief said.

"This will clear up a lot of breaks," Stillman said.

The chief pointed out that Ausar wasn't accountable for every break-in in the area, since police believe a few are unrelated.

Ausar was arraigned Tuesday and was held on $100,000 cash bail.

On Monday night, police went to Chicatabut Drive off Old Post Road at about 10 after a resident called about a person lurking in bushes near the end of her driveway.

When police arrived, they saw a car speed away, according to police reports.

Officers followed the sedan, stopping the car when it made an improper turn at a red light from Old Post Road to High Plain Street.

The gray Lincoln Town Car was registered to Ausar, according to reports.

Prior to the incident, police said, a Norwood Police asked area departments to watch for a car matching that description after a detective saw it leaving the scene of a break-in.

Also, police in Seekonk had issued a warrant for Ausar's arrest.

Walpole officers arrested Ausar and found a gold Masonic ring and marijuana in his pockets, according to reports. They say he was wearing all black.

While Ausar was detained, officers asked him "what nationally known symbol" was on the ring he carried. Ausar could not answer that the ring had a Masonic symbol, according to the reports.

In a search of the car, police say they found three screwdrivers and two pairs of gloves, tools typically used by burglars.

Police also seized a GPS device, cell phone, road atlas and a pair of Adidas sneakers, according to reports.

Detectives investigating break-ins in the area say the burglar wore Adidas shoes.

"Area departments, including Walpole, worked feverishly to locate this individual and vehicle for the past several months," Sgt. John Carmichael wrote in his report.
