DEDHAM —

A school crossing guard indicted for selling drugs was sentenced to 1 1/2 years in jail Monday, according to District Attorney William R. Keating's office.

Dedham Police arrested Joann M. Harrington, 46, in January 2007 with the help of the Norfolk County Police Anti-Crime Task Force. Police said she sold drugs to an undercover officer.

She admitted, during a May 27 Norfolk Superior Court hearing, to possessing and selling oxycodone, a class B drug. Sentencing was held on Monday.

"This was good police work by the Dedham Police Department and the Norfolk County Police Anti-Crime Task Force," District Attorney William Keating said in a statement.

"To have this kind of illegal activity by someone who is supposed to be in a protective role for children is egregious," he said.

Harrington worked as a part-time crossing guard in front of the Riverdale Elementary School.
