Police said they arrested Rafael Esquilin, 30, of 21 Staples Ave. Apt. 31 in Everett, on charges of possession of a Class B drug with intent to distribute, after finding bags containing about six grams of cocaine on him on Wednesday, March 10.

Lt. Robert Nedder said that at about 12:15 p.m. Officer Kevin Mahoney was conducting surveillance of a Dedham residence where an admitted drug user lives when he saw a gray 2000 Buick Century pull into the driveway. The resident left his home and entered the Buick on its passenger side, and he and the male driver leaned toward each other as if exchanging items, Nedder said. Within a minute, the resident left the car and quickly returned to his home, he added.

The suspect pulled out of the driveway, and after dispatch told Mahoney that the Buick had not been inspected, he stopped the car on Sprague Street near the Village Manor, Nedder said. A subsequent license check revealed that the driver, Esquilin, had a revoked Massachusetts driver’s license, he added.

Mahoney spotted several plastic “quarter bags” containing a white substance in Esquilin’s left sweatshirt pocket, Nedder said. Removing the bags, Mahoney found five plastic baggies containing a white powder that he believed was cocaine, which subsequently tested positive for the drug, Nedder said. Mahoney also found money folded in bundles inside the car, he added.

Besides the drug charge, Esquilin was also charged with driving with a revoked license and driving with no inspection sticker, Nedder said.

Esquilin pleaded not guilty at his arraignment the same day in Dedham District Court, and is due back there for a pretrial hearing May 4, Nedder said.
