THE STORY: With over sixty stores and restaurants now open and more coming in 2010, this year’s grand opening of Legacy Place brought crowds to the Providence Highway “open-air” mall.

The back story

“If you start with the right components, really the quality of the real estate, then it really gets momentum and comes together,” said said Brian Sciera, vice president of lifestyle centers for W/S Development Associates, in August.

On July 24, hundreds joined the 50-or-so campers outside the L.L. Bean store – the first shop to open at Legacy Place. Promised a chance at gift cards, deals and door prizes those that braved the rain said L.L. Bean was the place to be.

“I only get up for certain things - Black Friday, today,” said Melisa Nettleton, 29, a teacher from Roslindale, who joined the line at 5:45 a.m

A few months later, in September Whole Foods opened its largest store in the North Atlantic region coming in at 60,000 square feet. The market features an espresso bar, hundreds of beers and wines with a wine-help kiosk, and a walk-in cheese room and connected charcuterie for fine meats.

For family fun, Kings Dedham opened also in September with ten-pin bowling, mini-bowling, shuffleboard, three bars, and a restaurant with classic American food. Rumor has it a few celebrities, including Paul Pierce and David Ortiz have been known to frequent the bowling alley.
