DEDHAM —

Selectmen have launched an e-mail newsletter that they hope will improve communication throughout the town.

The newsletter, called TownWorks, is a publication compiled monthly by selectmen. Residents who are interested in the new feature can sign up by e-mailing townworks@dedham-ma.gov.

Sent yesterday, the first issue informs the public about next month's special Town Meeting and hearings on possible changes to the town's trash and recycling services.

The Farmers Market, which runs Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. this month, was also spotlighted.

Selectmen Chairman James MacDonald called the newsletter a "terrific idea," saying it gives selectmen the opportunity to tell the public what's going on around town and remind them of upcoming events.

He gave full credit to colleague Sarah MacDonald, saying she's been working on the project for some time.

Although the newsletter isn't necessarily a substitute for the town administrator's report and selectmen's old and new business at the end of board meetings, James MacDonald said, it is definitely a big step in improving communication with the public - one of the board's main goals.

"This is another tangible, proactive sign that the board is enthusiastically committed to advancing a new era of transparency and inclusiveness in local government - the town works best with citizens who are better informed and continually invited to participate in the process," James MacDonald said in a release.

The board adopted a policy last month requiring all town boards and departments to post contact information, meeting dates and meeting minutes to the town's website, Sarah MacDonald said.

Selectmen, she reported, have also launched a webpage called "Get Involved" through town's main Web site.

That page allows Dedham residents to list any expertise or talents they wish to share with the town. They are also able to show interest in aiding particular boards or departments.

In addition to providing information and reminders, TownWorks will also feature a "Hat's Off To..." section recognizing different people's contributions to the town.
