Thirty employees at the Borders Books in Legacy Place in Dedham will lose their jobs following a decision this week to liquidate all assets in the company’s 399 stores, according to store manager Chris Cayer.
All told, more than 10,000 jobs will be lost, according to a report by Reuters. New York Bankruptcy Court approved the decision today.
Legacy Place Borders Manager Cayer said he blamed the liquidation on bad leadership.
“They were unwilling to make the touch decisions to stay current in today’s society,” Cayer said this afternoon.
He added that today would be his last day with the company.
The Legacy Place store will begin liquidating all of its merchandise Friday, July 22. Some items will be on sale, and the length the store will remain open will depend on how quickly the items are sold, Cayer said.
“We’ll be open until customers buy everything,” he said.
All stores will close by the end of September, according to Borders spokeswoman Mary Davis.
Books-a-Million, the third largest bookstore chain after Barnes & Nobles and Borders, offered to buy 30-35 Borders Books stores, according to a report by Reuters. Books-a-Million spokesman Jeff Skipper was unavailable this afternoon to say whether the Legacy Place location was among those that the company was interested in buying.
The space occupied by Borders is about 64,000 square feet, said Joan Jolley, Legacy Place director of marketing and business development. She added that she cannot comment on what store will take Borders’ place.
The store had recently celebrated its one year anniversary at the Legacy Place location, Jolley said. They had been one of the stores marked to remain open in February during a period Borders was closing many stores due to bankruptcy proceedings, she said.
We’re sad they are going; it’s a big loss,” Jolley said.
She’s not the only one, according to Cayer.
“It’s very sad for all 30 employees and for the community at large,” he said.
