A Dedham temporary employee placement company has agreed to pay 973 employees nationwide more than $1.8 million in back wages after it improperly classified the employees as exempt from overtime requirements, the U.S. Department of Labor said.
Doing business as TAC Worldwide, 888 Consulting Group Inc. agreed to the pay back wages, resolving a lawsuit filed by the Labor Department alleging the company had violated the Fair Labor Standards Act. An investigation by the department found the company had "misclassified as exempt" from overtime requirements four employees at its headquarters at 888 Washington St. in Dedham, and 969 temp workers across the country.
The employees worked in a variety of different positions, including business analysts, project manager and accountants.
A consent judgment signed in U.S. District Court in Massachusetts on Monday orders 888 Consulting Group to pay back wages between February 2006 and June 2008.
