The Dedham High boys hockey team traveled to Newton North Saturday with a chance to earn its first Bay State Conference win on Saturday afternoon and, although they were defeated 4-1, the Marauders didn’t lack emotion.

Both teams have struggled this season getting wins on the board, but mistakes caused Dedham to be denied once again, moving to 2-13 on the season and 0-12 in BSC play.

The Marauders started the game strong and got the game’s first break when 5:54 into the first period, North’s Michael Bradley was called for cross checking to put Dedham on the man advantage.

Twenty seconds later, the Marauders set up their power play in the offensive zone and sophomore Nick Buttlar received the puck on the point and slid it past North goaltender Michael Uberti

But, after Dedham took the lead, the Tigers didn’t back down and the Marauders began to struggle.

“I think we just made too many mistakes. Early in the game we played pretty well,” said Dedham coach Paul Podolski. “But we gave up three two-on-ones and a breakaway, unfortunately, and that’s just the way it was. If we want to win we’ve got to make fewer mistakes.”

North’s first goal came with Dedham on the power play and less than three minutes remaining in the first period. Ryan Fanning skated the puck from his own zone and made a pass to T.J. Ryan who was positioned in the slot for a one-timer on Dedham goaltender John Kotkowski.

“Overall I thought we handled the puck pretty well. As the game went on I didn’t think we handled the puck as well,” Podolski said. “I don’t think we did a lot of things as well as we could have. I don’t think we passed well enough, we didn’t take advantage of our chances, we made too many mistakes.”

Newton North continued to control the game scoring three more unanswered goals. The first was 4:18 into the second period after the Marauders failed to keep the puck in their offensive zone. Just a few minutes later, the Tigers tallied their third goal after Dedham applied offensive pressure, but the Tigers were able to move past and break out of the zone to go down for the score.

The Tigers tallied their second short-handed goal of the game with less than three minutes remaining in the second, to put them up, 4-1.

Emotions ran high during a scoreless third, with the teams exchanging penalties throughout the final period, culminating in a late skirmish.

“We don’t take advantage of our chances, it’s as simple as that,” said Podolski. “We’ve had a struggle all year taking advantage of our chances and I don’t think we took advantage of our chances.”

Dedham was coming off one of its better recent performances last Wednesday, 2-0 loss to Herget Division leader Wellesley that was a one-goal contest deep into the third period.
