DEDHAM —

A speeding motorbiker tried to pull a fast one on police – pulling over to the side of the road, then taking off again as a detective stepped out of his car – before he was eventually apprehended and arrested yesterday, police said.

Dana Holmes, 26, from Milton was charged with speeding, a marked lanes violation, driving with a suspended license, failure to stop for a stop sign, and failure to stop for police.

Lt. Robert Nedder said that at about 5:45 p.m. yesterday Det. Robert Dietenhofer, who was driving an undercover police car, was parked in a lot on River Street. Dietenhofer saw an orange motorcycle going about 50 mph in a 30 mph zone as it came into Dedham from Boston on River Street, and crossed the line into oncoming cars, Nedder said.

The motorcycle stopped at a red light at River and Milton, but when the light turned green, the bike revved up to a high speed as it crossed the intersection and continued down River, according to Nedder. Dietenhofer saw the motorcycle fail to stop at a stop sign on River before taking a right onto Whiting Avenue, Nedder said. At that point, Dietenhofer put on his blue lights and siren, and the driver pulled over and stopped at Whiting Avenue and Walnut Street, Nedder said.

But as Dietenhofer left his car, the motorcycle left at a high speed – “a trick we’ve seen before,” Nedder said.

The detective called the development in to dispatch, and followed as the motorbike sped by Dedham High School and went through a stop sign at the next intersection, Nedder said. The biker accelerated and pulled away – “so fast that the officer lost sight of him” – and Dietenhofer decided not to pursue for safety reasons, Nedder explained.

Dietenhofer did continue in the same direction, however, and a passing motorist was able to point him in the same general path that the fleeing biker had taken, Nedder said.

Ultimately, after a pursuit that Nedder loosely estimated at a mile long, Officer Scott Peterson stopped the driver on Washington Street northbound at Curve Street, Nedder said. Dietenhofer arrived a short time later – positively identifying Holmes and his 2009 orange Honda motorcycle – and the Milton man was arrested without incident, Nedder added.

Holmes, of 244 Elliot St. in Milton, was arraigned today in Dedham District Court, pleading not guilty. He was released on personal recognizance, and is due back Aug. 5 for a pretrial hearing.
