An exterior windowpane in the library of the Avery School was smashed by a rock last night, but it does not appear that anyone entered the building, which had one side door open, police said.

Lt. Robert Nedder said police were called at 10:30 p.m. by a man who reported seeing six males running from the back of the Avery, at 123 High St. Two of them were carrying backpacks, but the man lost sight of where they went, Nedder said.

The caller told a dispatcher that the males were all dressed in black and ran through the back of the Avery property toward Mother Brook, according to the police log.

Police found an open door at the side of the school, but it did not seem that anyone went inside and nothing was taken, Nedder said.

The exterior pane of a library window was broken, but not the interior portion, Nedder said. The custodian said the pane was not broken when he left school earlier in the evening, Nedder added.
