Police said they arrested a drunk driver who crashed into a Norfolk County sheriff's vehicle that was parked at a construction detail on Providence Highway Wednesday night.
A green 1991 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by Carlos Catala, 33, rear-ended the sheriff's vehicle around 10 p.m. in the northbound middle travel lane near 870 Providence Highway, according to Lt. Robert Nedder.
Officer Collin O'Sullivan said Catala was sitting in front of LensCrafters when he arrived to investigate the accident. Catala, whose breath O'Sullivan said smelled like alcohol, failed field sobriety tests.
O'Sullivan arrested Catala and charged him with driving under the influence of alcohol. Nobody was injured in the accident, Nedder said.
The crash damaged the rear end of the sheriff's vehicle and the Volkswagen had heavy front-end damage, according to Nedder.
Catala, of 5050 Washington St., Apt. 340, West Roxbury, pleaded not guilty at arraignment in Dedham District Court. He was released without bail and is due back in court for a pretrial hearing Aug. 18.
