Police said they arrested Gerard Cullen, 43, of Norwood early Saturday, Sept. 26 after police said he struck a car and then left the scene. A man, who was driving a gray Mercury Sable, told police that he was at a stop sign at Whiting Avenue and Mount Vernon Street when he was hit from behind by a pickup truck, police said. Police said the truck, a black 2000 Ford F-150, went around the Sable, proceeding onto Mount Vernon and then High Street toward Dedham Square, as the victim followed, Nedder said.
At 12:59 a.m. Saturday, Officer Scott Peterson was working a paving detail on High Street when he saw the Sable with some rear-end damage, Nedder said. After the Sable driver explained what had happened, Peterson got into his cruiser and was stopped the Ford truck at the intersection of Eastern Avenue and Providence Highway, Nedder added.
Police said Cullen was unsteady on his feet, had glassy and bloodshot eyes, and his breath smelled of alcohol. Cullen was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of liquor, second offense, as well as leaving the scene of property damage, Nedder said. The front of Cullen’s truck was also damaged, police said.
Cullen, of 78 Elliot St., was arraigned Monday, Sept. 28, in Dedham District Court. He pleaded not guilty to all charges. Cullen was released on $1,000 bail. He is due back in court for a pretrial hearing Saturday, Oct. 19.
