Investigators are looking into the death of a 38-year-old inmate at South Middlesex Correction Center.

Kelly Donovan was pronounced dead at 3:58 a.m. Dec. 3 at the Western Ave. facility, after a roommate noticed she was having trouble breathing at 3:43 a.m.

Following department policy regarding the unattended death of inmates, the Department of Correction contacted the office of Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone, said Diane Wiffin, DOC spokeswoman.

Wiffin said the death did not appear to be the result of suicide or foul play. A cause, however, has yet to be determined and the matter is still under investigation.

Donovan, formerly of Dedham, was serving a one year prison sentence for shoplifting.

She was sentenced on Dec. 9, 2008 and would have been parole eligible as of May 18, 2010.
