Haverhill man charged with OUI
DEDHAM – Police arrested a 23-year-old Haverhill man after he was found sleeping in his car at a major Providence Highway intersection on Friday, Nov. 6 around 11:20 p.m., police said.
Anthony Lewis, of 435 Washington St. Apt. 1, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, resisting arrest and assault and battery on a police officer, police said.
Lt. Robert Nedder said an off-duty Dedham officer saw Lewis apparently asleep at the wheel of his vehicle on Providence Highway southbound at Elm Street. Two officers knocked on Lewis’ windows for one to two minutes before they woke him up, and outside he appeared unsteady on his feet and his breath smelled somewhat of alcohol, Nedder said. After Lewis failed field sobriety tests, he was arrested for driving under the influence, police said.
While en route to the station, Lewis yelled and screamed obscenities at Officer Collin O’Sullivan, kicking the floor, door and window in the rear of the cruiser, Nedder said. At the police station, Lewis yelled at three officers and was combative and resistant, Nedder said. After leg irons were put on Lewis, he remained combative, spitting twice on O’Sullivan’s face, before he was finally placed in a cell, Nedder added. Lewis pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Dedham District Court Monday, Nov. 9, and is due back there for a pretrial hearing Dec. 9.

After hearing several barrels had been hit, Officer David Chambers went to 274 Washington St. at 2:17 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8, where he saw a vehicle parked on the side of the road facing the wrong direction, said Lt. Robert Nedder. Bethoney left the driver’s seat and approached Chambers, who detected a strong odor of alcohol on her breath, Nedder said.
