George Gillis, a Norton business owner and resident, facing charges of motor vehicle homicide in connection with an accident that killed a Westwood man, will wait until June 9 to be arraigned.

Gillis appeared in Dedham District Court Tuesday submitting a motion to dismiss the charges prior to his arraignment.

Judge Mary Hogan Sullivan agreed to postpone arraignment until June 9, despite opposition from prosecutors, said David Traub, spokesman for the Norfolk District Attorney's office.

The judge will review transcripts and tapes, among other things, from Gillis's March 24 probable cause hearing, Traub said.

The charges stem from a December 2008 accident at a construction site in Westwood that killed Edward Hansen, 78, of Westwood.

A clerk magistrate in Dedham District Court filed a criminal complaint against Gillis April 17. The complaint states that on Dec. 9, 2008, Gillis operated a motor vehicle "recklessly, and by such operation did cause the death of another person."

If convicted, Gillis could face jail time from 30 days to two and a half years, or a fine from $300 to $3,000.

"I'm quite confident that they'll realize it was no more than an unfortunate accident," Gillis said in April after the complaint was filed.

The accident occurred on Margery Lane in Westwood, where Hansen, a library trustee and former Gillette engineer, was apparently watching construction. Gillis, owner of George Gillis Trucking, was driving a tractor-trailer work truck when he struck and killed Hansen, who was standing behind the truck.

Gillis, 58, of 11 Park Lane, was an unsuccessful candidate for the Norton board of selectmen in April.
