A 29-year-old Hyde Park woman stabbed her boyfriend, a Dedham firefighter, with a machete and shattered one of his car windows, a Suffolk County District Attorney spokesman said Wednesday, Feb. 1.

Jessica Atkins was having an argument with her boyfriend on the morning of Saturday, Jan. 28, as he packed up his belongings to leave her Hyde Park home, according to District Attorney Press Secretary Jake Wark.

During the argument, Atkins allegedly picked up a machete that was in its sheath and swung it at her boyfriend, Wark said. The sheath flew off and the exposed blade left a long but minor stab wound on the victim’s back, according to Wark.

The boyfriend continued to collect his belongings and got into his car. Atkins followed him, grabbed onto the passenger side window, slightly ajar, and pulled on it until it shattered, Wark said.

Atkins then crawled inside the moving vehicle, according to Wark.

The victim called the East Dedham fire station to be treated for his wound, and Atkins bailed out of the car at that time, Wark said.

Dedham Police received a call at 10:55 a.m. reporting the victim was in the East Dedham fire station with a stab wound, according to a report filed by Dedham Patrol Officer James Lemanski.

Lemanski’s report described the slash wound as about three to four inches across and just above his waist on the victim's left side. Boston Police were notified and apprehended Atkins on Veterans Road in Dedham, Lemanski wrote.

The victim was taken to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, received two stitches and was released, according to a Boston Police Department incident report.

Boston Police charged Atkins with assault with a dangerous weapon, to wit, a machete, and malicious destruction of property.

Atkins was released on $2,500 cash bail on Saturday, Jan. 28, and taken to Faulkner Hospital, according to Wark. Atkins had injuries to her nose and left forearm, according to the Boston Police report.

Atkins carved her boyfriend’s name on to her forearm, Wark said.

The machete, seized as evidence by Boston Police, has a blade about a foot long with a white handle and a brown sheath, according to the department’s report.

Atkins’ lawyer Jack Diamond declined to comment.

Atkins will be arraigned at the West Roxbury District Court at 9 a.m. on March 2. At the same hearing she will face a charge on an unrelated incident in which she threw a bottle at an off-duty police officer who was her neighbor, Wark said.
