Dedham —
Candidates for the 11th Norfolk District State House seat are spending the last hours before the polls open this morning reaching out to their supporters to get them to vote in the party primaries.

In the race to replace Bob Coughlin, the Dedham Democrat who resigned the seat to take a post in Gov. Deval Patrick's administration, all of the Democrats - Steve Bilafer, Thomas Boncek, Joanne Flatley and Cheryl Schoenfeld - hail from Dedham.

Of the Republicans, William McKinney lives in Dedham, and Doug Obey is from Westwood.

The 11th Norfolk District includes all of Dedham and Westwood as well as Precinct 8 in Walpole.

The winners of the Democratic and Republican primaries will face independent Paul McMurtry, owner of the Dedham Community Theatre, in the special election May 15.

"We feel we've identified our voters, so we're spending today (Monday) making some final phone calls and getting ready for the opportunity tomorrow to get voters to the polls," Bilafer, who served as a top aide to former Attorney General Tom Reilly, said yesterday.

Boncek, a home improvement contractor, said he planned to make phone calls yesterday.

"You can swing a lot of votes in the last couple of days," Boncek said. "I'm going out, talking to people, remaining calm and hoping for the best."

Flatley, a School Committee member, said her team plans to continue campaigning and making phone calls after a weekend of attending events and meetings. "We'll work up until the minute the polls open," Flatley said.

Schoenfeld, chairwoman of the Precinct 7 Town Meeting members and chairwoman of all precinct chairmen, said she and her campaign team were "in full gear."

Asked what she means by "full gear" and whether she was making phone calls or knocking on doors, Schoenfeld responded, "Everything. We're going at it 24 hours a day. I don't want to give my secrets away."

On the Republican side, McKinney, a Republican State Committee member, Dedham Finance Commission member and deputy administrative officer of the state Executive Office of Health and Human Services, said he was spending yesterday making phone calls to supporters and volunteers.

"We're lining up our people and getting them ready for tomorrow (Tuesday)," McKinney said.

Obey, a certified financial planner and chairman of the Westwood Republican Town Committee, also said he was calling voters on Monday.

"We're leaving messages to remind them to vote. Tomorrow (Tuesday), assuming it's not raining, we'll have people at the polls holding signs," Obey said.

"We expect a tight race, so every vote is going to count," Bilafer said. "I hope everyone can get out and vote, no matter who they're voting for."
