A driver on Route 128 was seriously injured today when he was struck by a storm drain cover that flew through the windshield of his car, state police said.

The accident happened about 5:30 a.m. while the man was driving the Toyota Corolla north near the University Avenue exit in Westwood.

According to a preliminary investigation by state police, the impact that occurred when the storm drain cover dislodged and struck the front windshield caused the vehicle to careen into a Jersey barrier before stopping in the highway's left lane.

The northbound lanes of the highway were closed while a medical helicopter landed to take the injured driver to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. The man's name was not immediately released.

Traffic was backed up for miles during the morning commute.

State police and MassHighway were investigating.
