Kevin Dole is the 2009 Pathologist of the Year. The College of American Pathologists selected Dole for its top honor due to his leadership on its Council on Membership and Professional Development, and “his significant contributions to the college and the specialty of pathology over more than two decades.”

 

Q: What sparked your interest in pathology?

A: I became interested in the study of diseases and tissues after starting medical school. Pathology is the basic building block for the study of diseases.

 

Q: Are you the first Pathologist of the Year from the Boston area?

A: No, Shields Warren, M.D. in 1955, Bradley Copeland, M.D. in 1963, and Paul Raslavicus, M.D. in 2004 (preceded me). They were all from the Boston area

Q: Describe the work you do as the lab director at Dedham Medical Associates.

A: I oversee the quality of the lab tests, which are performed by the lab. I also advise on equipment and methodologies to perform the testing and review the qualifications of the lab personnel.

 

Q: Which diseases do you find the most intellectually stimulating?

A: I find the multiple presentations of cancer to be very interesting and intellectually stimulating.

 

Q: How does your lab work and research relate to the work of doctors directly involved in patient care?

A: The lab tests that I am responsible for, and the reading of biopsies, are the information that other physicians require to treat their patients.
