Friday, Oct. 16

Support Dedham High School’s wrestling program by turning your old gold into cash. On Friday, Oct. 16 the team will be hosting a Gold to Green Party at the Recreation Center 269 Common St. at 6:30 p.m. until 9. Bring your unwanted gold jewelry to the Recreation Center and Gold to Green will donate 15 percent of all gold sold to the wrestling program. Dedham Parent Time and the Dedham Junior Woman's Club invite all Dedham women to a Wine and Cheese Social on Friday, Oct. 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dedham Community House, 671 High St. Free raffle prizes and brief presentations from both clubs about their upcoming events and the benefits of membership while you enjoy red and white wine, non-alcoholic drinks, coffee and plenty of delicious finger foods. Saturday, Oct 17

Boston Mensa will hold a testing session at the Dedham Holiday in at 55 Ariadne Rd, on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to noon. For information about tests and scores that American Mensa accepts, please see the Qualifying Test Scores link on the Join Mensa Page on the American Mensa, Ltd. Web site at http://www.us.mensa.org. If you do not have prior evidence of eligibility, you may qualify by taking two tests at a Mensa-sanctioned supervised testing session. You must be age 14 or over to attend a session. The Mensa testing session, which consists of two tests with a short break in between, usually lasts under two hours and costs $40. For more information or to reserve a place at the upcoming testing e-mail to mensatesting@gis.net

Family Fun at First Church's Fall Fair on Saturday, Oct.17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine. The First Church and Parish of Dedham at 670 High St. will hold its fall fair filled with pumpkins, moonwalks, face painting, raffles, games and more. Pony rides will be offered from noon until 2 p.m. Stay for lunch from the grill or bring home some delicious soup and baked goods. Entry forms and contest rules for our second annual baked good contest are available from firstchurch@dedhamuu.org. This year there will also be a sale of gently used Halloween costumes and dress up clothes. All proceeds of the Fall Fair benefit First Church and Parish of Dedham and its programs. In case of rain, activities will be moved to the Parish House.

Author/illustrator Grace Lin will be at The Blue Bunny bookstore, at 577 High St., on Saturday, Oct. 17 from1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., for a book signing of “Where the Mountain Meets the Moon. Lin is the author and illustrator of more than a dozen picture books, including “The Ugly Vegetables,” and “Dim Sum for Everyone!”

 

Looking for a good deal? The Noble and Greenough School, 10 Campus Drive, will hold its bi-annual yard sale on Saturday, Oct.17 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bliss Omni Flood Rink. This event will feature home decor items, sporting goods, furniture, toys, books, housewares and clothing for all ages and types, including designer labels and more. All proceeds support the Nobles Scholarship Fund and Faculty Enrichment Programs.

Sunday, Oct. 18

The fifth annual Anita E. Brefini Breast Cancer walk will be held Sunday, Oct. 18 at 10 a.m., at Bamboo restaurant, 55 Ariadne Road. The four-mile walk is in memory of Dedham resident Anita E. Brefini and all proceeds go toward the PinkRose Scholarship Fund.

Monday, Oct. 19

Elderhostel will present Adventures in Lifelong Learning at the Dedham Public Library, at 43 Church St., on Monday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. Rochelle Kruger, an Elderhostel volunteer ambassador will talk on educational travel for adults. The event is free and no reservations are required. The Elderhostel, a not-for-profit is the world’s leading provider of educational travel opportunities for adults. Information: ehrochelle@aol.com.

Artist Jacob Higginbottom

will be at the Endicott Estate, at 656 East St., on Monday, Oct.19, at 7 p.m., the for a watercolor demonstration sponsored by the Dedham Art Association. Higginbottom studied formal classic drawing while pursuing a degree in architecture and urban planning at Leigh and Columbia Universities. There will be an informative demonstration and light refreshments will be served. The event is $3 for nonmembers. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Dedham Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.      

Merchant Support Program - The Dedham Square Circle will be offering a free workshop

for Square businesses on creative marketing strategies on Monday, Oct. 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dedham Community House, 671 High St. This interactive workshop will be facilitated by Beth Darman Stone of ClairStone Communications, a marketing and PR professional who has worked with small independently owned businesses in the Greater Boston area for over 20 years. St. John's United Methodist Church

is hosting a six week discussion group, on the book “The Shack,” by William Young. The group will start meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. at 140 Sanderson Ave. Discussions over the six weeks will include issues of sin and forgiveness, healing and redemption, the nature of God and individual faith.
