The Dedham School Committee recognized last Wednesday the 44 local high schooler students who have won a John and Abigail Adams Scholarship this year. Their award: four years of free tuition at a Massachusetts state college or university.

A reception was held for the scholarship recipients at Dedham Middle School, before the committee honored the winners at the outset of its meeting.

“This is always such a great night for the School Committee, for our schools, and for our town, as we had this opportunity to recognize what is easily all of our best and brightest that we have,” said the committee’s chairman, David Roberts.

Dedham High School Principal Jake Santamaria said the scholarship recognizes the students that score advanced in one or both of the English Language Arts and Mathematics MCAS tests as sophomores, or advanced in one exam and proficient in the other. They also need to score in the top 25 percent of their district.

“We’re really proud with how many kids earned the award this year, and of course so many of them are in the process of doing their (college) applications,” Santamaria said. “I’m really happy for them, and how well they represent the school.”

Fourteen students attended the committee meeting last Wednesday night. As the principal read their names, Superintendent of Schools June Doe and Roberts presented them each with a certificate before they walked on stage for group photos.
