The Norwood Italian Lodge #1235, a local chapter of the Sons of Italy, recently held its Annual Scholarship Dinner at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Attended by nearly 70 members and guests, the evening included the presentation of two $1,000 scholarships.
Recipients of the awards were Erin Massimi, of Westwood, granddaughter of lodge members Anna Massimi and Rose Dempsey and daughter of John and Katherine Massimi; and Marisa Young, of Walpole, granddaughter of lodge member Elizabeth Lasden, and daughter of Susan Young.
The scholarship awards are made possible through the generous fundraising work of lodge members. The Italian Lodge extends its thanks to Italian Lodge President Janice Riolo and to the Scholarship Committee: Toni Eosco, Barbara Campagna, and George Franco.
In addition to the scholarship awards, a joint presentation was made to Mrs. Cyndee Durrane, Norwood High School’s Foreign Language Department chair; and to Mr. Justin Evans, Italian faculty member at Norwood High School. Durrane and Evans accepted a $2,400 donation in support of a new Italian language course, which will be offered at the high school starting in September.
In attendance as guests for the evening to make their donation were Vinnie Fruci and Frank Bartucca, of the Norwood Italian Social Club, which contributed $500 to the Italian language program. Toni and Steve Eosco, representing the Italian Lodge #1235, presented the lodge’s donation of $1,900 in support of the new program.
Norwood High School Principal George Usevich, along with Durrane and Evans, expressed his gratitude for financial support from the local Italian community.
The Norwood Italian Lodge and the Norwood Italian Social Club are pleased to support the education of Norwood’s youth, the instruction of Italian language, and the appreciation of Italian culture.
