Paul Gately, son of Veronica and the late Allan Gately, of Cottage Street in Norwood, was recently promoted to the rank of Master Sergeant with the Connecticut State Police.
A member of the Norwood High School Class of 1985, and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, Gately has been a Connecticut Trooper for the past 18 years.
During his career, he spent five years as a Trooper on patrol before he was promoted to Detective in the Major Crime Squad, where his responsibilities were the investigation of homicides, robberies, sexual assaults, and other high-profile cases. After 6 1/2 years as a detective, he was promoted to Sergeant and became a patrol supervisor for two years, and later supervised a drug task force.
He was then transferred back to Major Crime as a Detective Sergeant for two years.
Gately is a graduate of the U.S. Navy’s scuba school and has been an active member of the department’s dive team for the past 14 years.
He is now the executive director of the department’s Emergency Services Unit, where he oversees the Dive Team, SWAT team, Bomb Squad, Aviation Unit, and Canine Unit.
During his career, Gately has earned awards for Meritorious Service and for Outstanding Service, as well as seven Unit Citation Awards. He also earned a Meritorious Service Award from the Pennsylvania State Police for his work on a homicide case in that stae.
Gately is married to Sandra Johnson, the daughter of Patricia and the late Walter Johnson, formerly of Phillips Avenue. The Gatelys have been married for 13 years and have two children, Patrick, 9, and Faith, 7.
