Each year at its annual conference in April, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Massachusetts chooses from among its member clubs a woman who exemplifies strong leadership qualities. Jean Martens, a member of the Dedham Junior Woman’s Club, is the 2008 winner of this prestigious award.

Martens’s volunteer activities include not only DJWC committees and events, but also her involvement as a religious education director and teacher at Allin Congregational Church, Snowflake Fair chair, Riverdale School room mother and Spring Fair chair, and Fairbanks House tour guide.

As Co-Chair of the DJWC Conservation Committee, Martens has been instrumental in involving the club with Hestia House and its Fairy Godmother program, which supplies prom gowns to high school students who could not otherwise afford them.

A physical therapist by profession, Martens has also spent countless hours giving freely of her time and skills assisting a family member and a friend after both suffered serious accidents.

Martens lives in Dedham with her husband, Dennis, and her son, Kyle. The Dedham community is fortunate to have a person such as Jean Martens who selflessly contributes her time and efforts to better our community.
