Staples Inc. said it has agreed to pay $42 million for a global settlement that resolves several class action lawsuits that alleged the Framingham-based office supplier misclassified assistant store managers for the purposes of overtime pay.

The company said it agreed to the settlement to avoid ``further distraction from litigation'' that has been ongoing for three years. Staples also agreed to drop its appeal of a verdict against the company last year in New Jersey.

Staples maintains that its store labor model is compliant with applicable state and federal laws. The settlement resolves claims that date back to 2002 in some cases and covers more than 5,500 current and former employees.
